This isn’t just another list. It’s a celebration of the many strengths and diversities of the global gastronomy scene. More than 20 countries from Denmark to South Africa, Colombia and Japan are represented on the 2022 list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
When the World’s 50 Best restaurants are unveiled, the list becomes a compass and destination finder for experience-hungry food travellers and bloggers. It’s an alluring portal that showcases extraordinary cuisine from all corners of the world.
What better way to experience the world than by visiting dining destinations that activate all senses and leave you with unforgettable memories?
Up until 2019 restaurants could be voted no. 1 on the 50 best list year after year. This is no longer the case. Instead, no. 1 restaurants from previous years will be grouped in a category called
Best of The Best. They will remain here, glowing on the global food map as all-time extraordinary dining experiences, but they can’t be voted in on the list again.
In this group, we find Noma in Copenhagen, The Fat Duck in the United Kingdom, El Bulli in Spain and all the other no. 1 restaurants.
According to William Drew, Group Editor of 50 Best, the organisation behind The World’s 50 Best has created Best of The Best to ensure that its list and awards remain relevant and exciting year after year.
The more than 1000 voters behind the World’s 50 Best Restaurants are referred to as The Academy. They are comprised of chefs, restaurateurs, food journalists and gourmet travellers.
The voters are selected by chairpersons from 27 geographical regions, representing the entire world. Aside from the Academy’s Chairs and Vice-Chairs, all voters must stay anonymous. Every year, at least 25% of the voting panel is renewed. To ensure equality and diversity, the gender balance in the panel is 50/50.
Restaurants that make it to the 50-best list don’t have to reach certain benchmarks or have won other food awards or prizes. Any restaurant that has been open during the voting period is eligible. In other words, it’s up to the individual voter to decide what a great restaurant is. Naturally, their spotlight and taste buds are focused on the quality of the food and service. The atmosphere, decor and surroundings will always play a role as well, but how much these things weigh in the final decision comes down to the experience of the individual voter.
Earlier this year, the list of restaurants ranked between no. 51 and 100 in the world was revealed. Restaurants in 22 different destinations are on the list, and 2022’s list included brand new dining spots in the Middle East. A wide range of appetite-enticing concepts are represented:
The restaurants on the 51-100 list serve everything from simple Mexican food cooked with local ingredients and western European dishes served in Brutalist surroundings to eel and bone marrow on sourdough and visionary interpretations of traditional Turkish plates and much more.
