The artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has been making headlines since the first prototype was launched in November 2022. ChatGPT can provide fashion advice for a friend’s birthday party, suggest recipes, and offer temporary companionship. With the latest update, the paid version can even pass the American bar exam. But can it also help restaurants?

ChatGPT can produce a plethora of different types of texts within seconds. Whether that is amazing news depends on your objective and your own personal view on AI. Furthermore, there are ethical and social implications to consider. It has been argued that ChatGPT could have a negative impact on society. Examples of concerns are AI producing harmful information, students using AI to write exam papers, job losses and AI outpacing society’s ability to adapt. There are also concerns about biased information and a lack of human touch.

When it comes to the ethical questions and potential future development of ChatGPT, our advice is to keep an eye on the news. Everything AI is exploding this year, and what’s true today might change tomorrow.

Nevertheless, ChatGPT can be used in multiple smart ways that can benefit restaurants. Below, we’re going to explore some possible uses of ChatGPT in restaurants. We’ll also look at how some other businesses are using it.

Beers and travel guides: this is how other businesses are using ChatGPT

Many businesses are already experimenting with ways of using AI in their areas of expertise. One of them is the Danish craft beer company, Mikkeller. In March, Mikkeller released two new beers that were entirely crafted by artificial intelligence. The beers, named West Coast IPA Warriors and Pilsnerful Pursuit, were developed using advanced AI algorithms.

The aim of Mikkeller’s project was to explore whether machines can create beer recipes that are as good as those created by humans.

Mikkeller even used AI to write their press release.

“We are excited to launch these two beers that represent the future of brewing. As a company, we are always looking for innovative ways to push the boundaries of what’s possible in brewing, and AI is an exciting tool that allows us to achieve that goal.” —  Mikkel Bjergsø, founder of Mikkeller.

The Danish travel agency, Spies, has started using ChatGPT to find out what customers want to learn more about. The agency’s employees use the information to craft travel guides and website content written in their own words.

According to Rasmus Panduro, Head of Digital Operations at Spies, the agency has no intention of replacing human workers with AI chatbots. “ChatGPT is a new technology that’s developing fast, making it difficult to predict what will happen,” Panduro stated in an interview with DR, a Danish broadcasting company.

5 ways restaurants can use ChatGPT

ChatGPT for restaurants

Let ChatGPT help you with social media marketing

Writing appetising content for your restaurant’s social media channels is important to keep guests engaged and in the loop. However, coming up with scroll-stopping text for an Instagram or Facebook post can sometimes be difficult, especially in a busy restaurant. ChatGPT can help you with this task. The first thing you need to do is register an account with ChatGPT. You can do that here.

Once you’ve registered, you can write a prompt for the chatbot. A prompt is a request that tells the AI which task you want it to perform. Detailed prompts with concrete information yield the best results.

For example, let’s say you want to inform guests that you’re introducing a new spring menu in two weeks. ChatGPT can assist you in creating a catchy caption for a social media post about the menu.

A prompt for this kind of task could look like this:

Suggest four texts for a Facebook post. The text should let guests know that we’re introducing our new spring menu with seasonal vegetables. We’re a vegan restaurant. The tone should be laid back. The goal is to make guests want to book a table at our restaurant.

Here are the suggestions we got from ChatGPT:

If you’re not happy with the suggestions, you simply ask for more suggestions or request specific changes to the content. If you want to shape the content in your own way, you can use the suggestions from the chatbot as inspiration for your texts.

Restaurant event brainstorming with AI

Restaurant events have become very popular among guests. Furthermore, they’re a great way to protect your restaurant from no-shows, because guests can buy tickets in advance. This year, we have seen our customers host everything from dinners with lectures about psychoanalysis to Mother’s Day events with flower arrangement workshops.

Coming up with ideas for unique restaurant events can be pretty fun, but sometimes our brainstorming process needs a little boost. Why not experiment with letting ChatGPT suggest ideas for events you can host? Feed the chatbot some information about your restaurant’s concept, and ask it to present you with a list of ideas. If you already have a lot of ideas for events, you can let ChatGPT help you with the details of the event.

Are you already a DinnerBooking customer? Remember that you can set up your events directly in our booking system. Naturally, we’re always happy to help you with this process!

Reply more efficiently to guest feedback

Do you sometimes struggle with replying to your restaurant’s guest reviews? Replying to guest reviews and feedback can help strengthen your brand and boost your SEO ranking. By using ChatGPT you can make this process less time-consuming. Copy the feedback from the guest, paste it into the ChatGPT text field, and ask your bot assistant to suggest a friendly reply. If you want to reply to more than one review at the same time, you can copy multiple reviews and paste them into the field. Request a unique reply for each review. To keep a human touch, you can end each reply with a personal salutation.

ChatGPT as inspiration for restaurant menus

Inspiration for seasonal menus

We know from experience that all of our client restaurants are incredibly skilled when it comes to crafting appetising menus. Nevertheless, a little inspiration to get the creative juices flowing is always a nice thing. When it’s time to craft a new menu, you can experiment by asking ChatGPT for suggestions. Prompt the chatbot with the season, your location, and specific details about your restaurant’s previous menus. You can even paste last year’s menu from the same season in the text field and ask for suggestions for new menu items in the same kitchen style.

Unsure about which of the dishes on your menu may contain allergens? Ask ChatGPT to go through all menu items. That way, you’ll be able to provide important information to guests with food allergies. Keep in mind that ChatGPT still makes mistakes, so it’s a good idea to double-check the information it provides when it comes to food safety.

Proofread or improve English content on your restaurant’s website

ChatGPT and languages

If you’re not interested in having a chatbot create content, menus, or event suggestions for your restaurant, you can use it as a proofreader instead. However, keep in mind that ChatGPT is better in some languages than others. If you write English text for your website, blog, menu, or social media, you can paste your text into ChatGPT’s text field and ask it to proofread the text for you. Sometimes, it will give you a corrected version of your text, and other times it will suggest corrections. It can even provide explanations as to why making certain corrections is a good idea. If you want a text translated into English, that’s also possible, but the results might vary depending on the language you’re translating from.

With ChatGPT and other AI tools, we have entered a new era that’s still difficult to grasp. The tools are clearly useful in countless ways, but keep in mind that they’re not always as smart or human as they seem. Furthermore, each restaurant is unique because there is a team of unique humans running it. ChatGPT can solve tasks efficiently, but it can’t taste the flavour of the soup you’ve spent hours fine-tuning or feel the ambience in your restaurant. For this reason, it’s worth paying attention to the extent to which you use these kinds of technologies, and how it affects the human touch that’s the heart of your restaurant.
