The complete list for the Michelin Guide Nordic has just dropped! The stars are truly shining on the Nordics. Take a look below to see where your next restaurant visit should be.

On July 4th, the Michelin Guide presented a new selection of restaurants for the MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries. The guide reveals an abundance of intriguing and dynamic restaurants that represent the Nordic culinary scene with their incredible culinary talents. The 2022 guide features 255 restaurants from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, including 74 starred restaurants, 38 Michelin Green Stars and 32 Bib Gourmand restaurants.

Several new restaurants have also been noticed by the Michelin Guide:

Since the launch of the Nordic guide in 2014, our inspectors have repeatedly been impressed by the culinary innovation at the local restaurants. Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland are destinations that light up when it comes to the chefs’ personality and courage – and today, they are internationally recognized gastronomic trendsetters.”  — Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide.

The Nordics are famous for their groundbreaking cuisine

Nordic cuisine has been on the rise for years. Nordic cuisine is about merging traditional techniques with a modern approach. One person to note for this era of New Nordic cooking is Danish chef Claus Meyer who created the New Nordic Kitchen Manifesto along with 12 other chefs. It shined a light upon the importance of purity, season, ethics, health, sustainability and quality of food and dishes.

And while everyone loves to eat IKEA meatballs (they really are delicious), there are also a lot of other places to eat Nordic food. The most notable restaurant to put the Nordics on the culinary map is Noma. Nordic cuisine is very true to nature, sustainable and continuously groundbreaking. The cuisine has spread like wildfire and has caused the Nordics to become a food haven.

“The growing number of Michelin Green Stars in the Nordic guide illustrates that sustainable awareness and concrete actions are part of the daily philosophy in many Nordic restaurants,”
Gwendal Poullennec.

So, what is the Michelin Guide exactly?

The Michelin Guide is a series of guidebooks created by the French tire company Michelin. To increase the demand for cars in 1900, they published a guide with maps, car mechanic listings, hotels etc., throughout France. And since 1926, the Michelin Guide has sprinkled stars on restaurants in more than 35 countries. Every year new guides reveal the best restaurants all over the world.

The restaurants included in the guide can earn from one to three Michelin Stars.

Restaurants that don’t get a star can still be highlighted in one of these two categories:

Bib Gourmand: This category highlights restaurants that serve good food at a reasonable price. These restaurants often serve simpler food that resembles good home cooking. In other words, food that leaves you satisfied and happy without breaking your budget.

Michelin Green Star: A category for restaurants that cook and serve sustainable food. More precisely, it goes to restaurants that make responsible choices that are better for the environment. For instance, they reduce waste, work with sustainable suppliers, and avoid plastic in the supply chain.

Restaurants can also be ‘recommended’ in the Michelin Guide without receiving a star or being in a specific category. According to Michelin, recommended restaurants are restaurants that have great chefs who cook good meals using high-quality ingredients. That means that these restaurants are so good that they deserve to be listed in the Michelin Guide.
